A self-taught British chef, Close has made a remarkable impact on the fine dining scene. Originally aspiring to be a professional golfer, and despite playing off scratch, Close’s unerring obsession with perfection made him take the painful decision that he needed to pursue another career path if he wanted to get to the very top. The transition came at the age of 28, when he set his sights on another passion – cooking – and it was a move that has led him to becoming one of the most respected chefs in the UK. This journey began when he and his family acquired The Raby Hunt, a small pub near Darlington, in the Northeast of England, and with no formal training, Close immersed himself fully in the art of cooking, whilst watching and learning from others to refine his skills and in doing so, he developed a unique approach to gastronomy.
James’s dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence paid off when The Raby Hunt earned its first Michelin star, making it a standout destination for food lovers. His innovative techniques and commitment to sourcing the finest ingredients soon led to the restaurant achieving a second Michelin star, cementing its status as one of the top dining establishments in the UK. The Raby Hunt became the only 2 Michelin-starred restaurant in the Northeast, a testament to Close’s talent and vision.
Beyond his Michelin-starred success, Close has been known for his global approach to cuisine, drawing inspiration from diverse culinary traditions. His dishes are meticulously crafted, often featuring bold flavours and artistic presentation. His restaurant was ranked fourth in The Good Food Guide’s Top 20 Most Exciting UK Restaurants of 2022, further solidifying his reputation as a trailblazer in the industry.
In 2024, Close embarked on a new chapter by joining Rockliffe Hall as Culinary Director. This move marked an exciting evolution in his career, as he took on the challenge of developing a world-class dining experience at the five-star hotel. His new restaurant at Rockliffe Hall will open in 2026, and is designed to offer an immersive culinary journey, allowing diners to interact with chefs and experience a fusion of global flavours in a bespoke setting.
Throughout his careers, Close has remained committed to pushing boundaries and redefining fine dining. His meticulous attention to detail, passion for innovation, and ability to create unforgettable dining experiences have earned him widespread acclaim. As he continues to evolve and expand his culinary influence, Close remains a key figure in the UK’s gastronomic landscape, inspiring both aspiring chefs and seasoned professionals alike.
